5 Most LGBT Friendly Cities In The US

Not every town is a great fit for LGBT residents, but some cities go above and beyond by encouraging acceptance and cultural development. Ready to make a move? Here are five of the most LGBT friendly cities in the U.S.

San Francisco

San Francisco has the largest percentage of LGBT residents of any U.S. city, with 6.2 percent of residents identifying as LGBT. This city is no stranger to welcoming LGBT visitors or residents, since its Castro District was one of the first LGBT neighborhoods to spring up in the U.S. The Castro is still the cultural center of the community and even has an LGBT walk of fame. You’ll find tons of LGBT events on just about every weekend in the Bay Area, but you definitely won’t want to miss the annual San Francisco Pride Celebration & Parade each June. With a legendary parade and endless after parties, this is an event to mark on your calendar each year.

It’s hard to believe that not every state has non-discrimination legislation to protect residents based on sexual orientation. Oregon is one of the dozen or so states that does have legislation in place, which makes Portland an even more welcoming place to live. This city also hosts events year-round to celebrate LGBT residents and visitors. Don’t miss the cocktail competition at THIRST Fest in February, the LGBT film festival QDoc in May, or the Portland Queer Music Festival in August.

Texas may be a relative newcomer to same-sex marriage legislation, but Austin has long been an LGBT friendly city. With over 5 percent of Austinites identifying as LGBT, this Texas city is one of the best places to live for LGBT residents. Just about every group in Austin has an LGBT group, including sports leagues. The city also hosts plenty of events celebrating the community. Mark your calendar for the Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival in September and an entire week of pride-related events in June.

Health care can prove challenging for LGBT residents, but the Human Rights Campaign highlights Providence as one of the most accommodating cities. Providence is also home to several civil rights organizations that help move LGBT equality forward in the city, including the ACLU of Rhode Island and PrideRI. If that wasn’t fabulous enough, check out Providence’s drag queen Glambassador Haley Star, a central figure in the city’s tourism industry. In June, don’t miss the annual RI PrideFest or the famous night parade.

Des Moines

The Midwest might not host the largest LGBT population in the nation, but that could soon change. Des Moines has made major strides to welcome LGBT residents, especially with its large number of state and national politicians who identify as LGBT. Whether you’re a Des Moines resident or just passing through, be sure to catch Capital City Pride in June and a performance by the Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus year-round.

No matter which coast you want to call home, there’s an LGBT friendly city that’s ready to welcome you with an accepting culture and tons of fun events.

How To Properly Clean Your Gutters

It’s fall again, that time of the year where you have to rake the lawn, get rid of dead and fallen leaves, as well as clean out your gutters in preparation for the winter snows and runoffs.

It’s that time of the year when men cringe at the sound of their wives telling them that the gutters need cleaning. It’s also that time when a few men unnecessarily hurt themselves or lose their lives trying to clean their gutters.

Now, before we move forward, we would advise you to hire a gutter cleaning expert to do this. Only proceed with doing it yourself if you are absolutely sure that you can do it without causing any harm to yourself and your loved ones.

Truth be told, cleaning gutters is a downright dirty task, but if you prefer to do it, then no worries. Just follow these tips below and you will not only clean out your gutters but also stay safe in the process.  With that out of the way, here’s how to properly clean your gutters.

Be Careful While Using those Ladders

For starters, use only sturdy and safe ladders. Always opt for the four legged ladder with an extension that will hold the debris bucket. Some people use wooden or orchard ladders. People who do this place themselves in unnecessary dangers.

Avoid them if you can. Ensure that people are aware that you’re doing some gutter cleaning using the ladder. Also, check the ladder for loose screws, dents, poor balancing or anything that could cause you to slip and fall.

Beware of Rodents, Dead Things, and Even Live Reptiles

This is very important if you live in a high foliage area, are surrounded by trees and have a few snakes local to the area.

If these creatures have taken up residence in your gutters, cleaning the gutters could startle them and cause them to bolt or attack you; an action that can frighten you, resulting in falls and injuries. This is one of the major causes of ladder falls every year. So, be very watchful while doing the cleaning.

Use a Gutter Scoop

Once you get up there, put on your gutter gloves and start scooping the debris into the bucket using a plastic gutter scoop. The gutter scoop is still the most effective tool to scrape out and reach even tough debris.

Avoid metal scoops because they can cause dents or worsen already rusting steel gutters as well as damage the gutter seams. For the farther parts of the gutter, use an extension pole attached to the gutter scoop to reach those areas. This will help prevent quick fatigue resulting from frequently moving the ladder.

Flush the Gutters

Now that you’ve removed much of the muck, use a garden hose with a pistol-grip trigger spray nozzle to flush out the remaining debris or clean the gutter. This is usually the best way to eliminate any leftover debris as well as spot any gutter leakages.

Should You Do It Yourself or Hire a Gutter Cleaning Service?

Well, that depends on your ability to do it yourself and do it well. We recommend getting a gutter cleaning expert because of its many advantages. Some of them include:

  • Expertise in cleaning
  • Ability to spot possible damages and fix them immediately
  • No damages caused by ladders leaning on gutters
  • Less property damage
  • No risk of injuries or death
  • Affordability – the average gutter cleaning service changes between $50-$300 depending on the length of the gutter and size of the home.

Now that you know what to do, you can go ahead and make an informed decision about doing it yourself doing an excellent job of cleaning your gutters or hiring a gutter cleaning expert, like those at Aerotech, to do it.
